Our base is Bad Goisern, the still, quiet heart of the Salzkammergut, and from here we will ride out into one of Europe's last truly unspoilt corners — a world of glacier-carved lakes, ancient forest, and limestone peaks that have barely changed since they were formed. Each day is a new loop, each evening a return to the same warm base. No packing up, no moving on — just four mornings waking up ready to ride deeper into the mountains.

Day 1

Salzkammergut Lakes Loop

Ride the wild heart of the Salzkammergut — a loop that carries you from Bad Ischl into a landscape of glacier-cut lakes, dense alpine forest, and air so crisp it feels borrowed from another century. Climb quietly through pine-shadowed hills to the Schwarzensee, a hidden emerald lake few ever find, before the trail opens out toward Wolfgangsee and St. Gilgen. The reward comes at the panoramic viewpoint above Lake Mondsee — one of those rare moments where you stop pedaling not because you're tired, but because the view demands it.

The return sweeps along the old Wolfgangsee railway embankment, a smooth, near-silent ribbon of path skimming the water's edge, with waterfalls, hidden viewpoints, and untouched shoreline unfolding at every turn.

This is cycling stripped back to its essence: unspoilt terrain, total tranquility, and scenery that stays with you long after the ride ends.

Day 2

Altaussee Loop

A ride through the mountains that built Austria's legends — out through the shadow of the Ewige Wand, deep into UNESCO World Heritage country. Descend toward the impossibly blue waters of Lake Altaussee, cradled beneath the Loser massif, then push on to Bad Aussee before curling south into the Salzkammergut's crown jewel: Hallstatt.

Trace the shoreline of Lake Hallstatt on quiet lakeside roads, pass through the old railway tunnel on the Koppentraun Trail, and climb back over the pass with the Ewige Wand watching once more as you return to Bad Ischl.

Ancient lakes, sheer limestone walls, and a village older than the maps that name it — this is a ride through one of Europe's last truly untouched corners, where every switchback opens onto water so still it barely seems real.

Day 3

Traunsee & Langbathseen Loop

A wilder ride into the high forest, where the Salzkammergut turns quiet and untamed. Climb from Bad Ischl through the Weißenbachtal, following the old cycle path deep into pine-covered hills before the trail opens onto the Langbath Lakes — twin pools of impossibly clear water, hidden in a fold of the mountains few travelers ever reach.

From there the route arcs north and east, tracing high ground above the Traunsee, with the great wall of the Traunstein rising across the water and views stretching out toward Gmunden. The descent brings you back down through untouched valley forest, the kind of unbroken green silence that makes this stretch of Austria feel genuinely wild.

This is the loop for riders chasing solitude — remote lakes, forest tracks, and mountain air so clean it resets something in you. Alpine adventure at its most elemental.

Day 4

Hallstatt to Gosaukamm

The most dramatic ride of the week. Head south from Bad Ischl beneath the Eternal Wall, drop to the shores of Hallstatt Lake, and skirt the water's edge past the old railway tunnel before turning deep into the valley — toward the jagged limestone spires of the Gosaukamm.

The road narrows as the peaks close in, climbing steadily through untouched alpine terrain until the full sweep of the Donnerkogel and its sister summits rears up ahead — one of the most breathtaking mountain panoramas in all the Alps. This is high Austria at its rawest: sheer rock walls, thin mountain air, and a silence broken only by wind and wheels.

A ride for those who want to feel small against something ancient — glacier-carved valleys, untouched wilderness, and a finish line set against one of Europe's great mountain skylines.
